| OLAYINKA FAGBAYI Associate

Olayinka Fagbayi grew up in Rochester, NY where she graduated high school early and spent her senior year teaching English in Mahasarakham, Thailand. After Thailand, she continued her travels in Cuenca, Ecuador, where she studied Spanish, tutored at an orphanage and volunteered as a nurse at a pregnancy clinic. Upon returning stateside, she spent one year tutoring chemistry and biology at Oakland High School, an experience that deepened both her connection to Oakland and her love for education.
In 2004, Olayinka enrolled at Stanford University, completing her B.S. in Biology in 2007 with a minor in Chemistry. While studying at Stanford, she continued What Calls Me to Education?

"Learning is a lifelong journey that instills within a person a vision of themselves and the world. In my life, learning has served as the primary mechanism for self-discovery. I attribute my strong sense of purpose to a diverse education that has combined a traditional academic program with service-learning and multicultural experience. My personal belief is that every global citizen should have access to healthcare and education; universal human rights that transcend national boundaries. Education enables youth to become active citizens of the world by contemplating its structure, complexities and universalities and subsequently effecting change. For me, the most beautiful aspect of education is that it can happen anywhere at any moment, if the proper space for learning has been created. Creating that inner and external 'space' for learning is where my passion in education lies." |
| tutoring, chaired a hip-hop dance troupe and conducted scientific research. Favorite quote:
"The time has come, the Walrus said. Perhaps things will become worse and then better. Perhaps there's a small god up in heaven readying herself for us. Another world is not only possible, she's on her way. Maybe many of us won't be here to greet her, but on a quiet day, if I listen very carefully, I can hear her breathing." ~ Arundhati Roy
